Permalink Reply by Erin Hunt on April 30, 2012 at 3:30pm Diatomaceous Earth plays a role in SmartBug-Off after it has passed through the horse's system - it discourages insects from breeding in manure.
Permalink Reply by Breana on April 30, 2012 at 3:53pm It keeps flies and biting pests from breeding in manure, and repels flies from biting and bothering your horse.
Permalink Reply by Paige Talledo on April 30, 2012 at 4:00pm Diatomaceous Earth discourages insect breeding in manure. I have my one mare on this as she's prone to allergic reactions due to bug bites. Fingers x this works!
Permalink Reply by Martina Miner on April 30, 2012 at 4:04pm It is the fossilized remains of marine phytoplankton. When sprinkled on a bug that has an exoskeleton it gets caught between their little exoskeleton joints. As they move, it acts like razor blades and cuts them up. Won't hurt mammals so you (horses) can eat it...passes into manure where it kills the bugs! It is in a lot of grain based products for people too. :)

Permalink Reply by Amanda Rose on April 30, 2012 at 4:06pm It kills internal parasites by cutting their exoskeleton, which causes them to lose their fluids and dehydrate to death. This stops the cycle of the horses eating parasite eggs (such as bot fly eggs) and them maturing as they pass through the digestive tract. It halts that reproductive cycle and will cut down on fly problems very quickly. We use it to kill ants. It also works great on Scratches caused by mites (mange) as it does the same thing to the mites (fantastic product for heavily-feathered breeds!).

Permalink Reply by Liz Baker on April 30, 2012 at 4:54pm The particles of DE are small enough and sharp enough to erode the exoskelleton of the parasites without being large enough to harm the animal. When these undigested particles pass through the digestive system and into the manure, they do the same things to parasites which lay their eggs in the manure and to the larval form of those parasites once they've hatched. At least that's my understanding of their function in parasite prevention in horses.
