Comment by Mary Ann on February 2, 2013 at 9:03pm I agree with you, Jackie, also!
All I mainly want from a horse is a great partner and friend, and one that is a joy to to ride enjoys being around me!
Comment by Cherie Davis on May 1, 2012 at 9:57pm All that you've said makes perfect sense to me. I hope to make my horses happy, I hope to log lots of miles ridden - and - all this with a western saddle!! So go ahead and talk horsemanship 'cause you've got a good listener now.
The only "person" that can really tell you if you are good or bad is your horse. If your horse with happy with your riding it really does not matter what anyone else thinks.
Of course this means we have to learn how the horse tells us he is unhappy, and sometimes this can be really subtle!
There is so much I want to talk about with riding and horses, but many people really seem to feel insulted about what I say, get defensive, go on the attack, and the discussions become really hairy.
I always want to talk about good horsemanship. I get tired of people deciding that I do not have a right to talk about good horsemanship because I do not compete--and win. Winning a horse show class is NOT proof that your horsemanship is good. Competing at shows is not proof that your horsemanship is good.
When I started riding hunt seat over 40 years ago good horsemanship was preached and practiced. I guess that I am just old fashioned, but I keep trying to talk about it because good horsemanship is of utter importance to the HORSES.
