You are lucky to have trails!
Just recently the farm where I get my lessons had a trail open up in a few acres of woods. I got a few trail rides in before Mia (at 30 yrs. or more) fell violently "in love" with a new mare. It has calmed down a bit but both mares still get upset if they can't see each other. Back to just riding in the ring, Oh well.
Comment by Margaret Porkolab on December 18, 2012 at 11:41am Hi Margaret.
I am now riding two Arabs, Mia, the bay mare in my avatar photo, and Mick. I am also riding a British Riding Pony, Bobby. I used to have horses but then I got disabled with Multiple Sclerosis, the horses died off, and now I get to ride other people's horses. Yes I pay to ride but the ladies I ride with are very understanding. Riding other's people's horses can be a lot cheaper than owning.
I mostly ride in the ring, for just 30 minutes at a time, 3 times a week. Recently I got an RS-tor to help me keep my seat in the saddle and I have had some mini trail rides recently! I LOVE to ride, and because I ride I can still walk on my own two feet (with canes.)
Comment by Margaret Porkolab on December 16, 2012 at 9:41pm Hey Holly, I was lucky, I got to ride 3 different horses this week, 2 Arabs, mare and gelding, and an Arab/Welsh mare. Friday I rode the bay mare, Mia, who is in my avatar photo.
And on Wednesday I was sweating and riding in my shirtsleeves, then Friday it was just above freezing, with a wind blowing. Then today it was pretty nice, sunny with a breeze. I do not have access to an indoor arena, luckily two of my rides each week are in a ring that is good in most weather, it mostly just gets puddles.
I change to a Mullen mouth snaffle, it is slightly curved in the mouthpiece and does not have a joint. A really mild bit, and all three horses are reaching out willingly (most of the time) and taking good contact.
Isn't riding great!!!
Yesterday was even hotter! My regular mare has a stone bruise, lame, so I got to ride another Arab mare. We had a few quiet discussions. I'm going to have to take all my leather saddles out to the stable to see which fits her best. If none of them do I guess I'll have to ride her in my Wintec.
Comfortable horses are happier horses and they obey their riders a lot better!
I had to get up at 6:00 AM so I could ride at 8:00 AM while it was still cool. Even so at the end of 30 minutes I was hot and tired. But riding took care of all my aches and pains I had this morning.
I just LOVE riding!
Comment by Holly on May 22, 2011 at 5:40pm Alas I didn't get to ride today. At least I got to ride twice last week. I did it two days in a row and got real tired, but I rode!!!!
Somehow the universe looks a lot better after I ride a horse.
I agree with you totally. Riding is extra special.
I owned horses for almost 40 years. Before my Multiple Sclerosis got bad it was wonderful, I got to own horses, later I also got to live with my horses, and I got to ride. But when my MS got real bad all my energy was taken up just trying to take care of the horses and I did not ride. I kept my horses until they died or had to be put down, but I did not replace them.
I decided that I wanted to RIDE. Admittedly it is not as much fun to ride a lesson horse or what I can find at the stables I ride at as it was riding my own horses that I trained. But I am RIDING. I sometimes miss having horses, but when I did not ride I missed riding all the time. Like something had died within me.
I love riding horses!!!!!
