This page is dedicated to watching the mares on Mare Stare, starting with the mini mares at Mulligans Run Farm. But be warned....it is highly addictive.

Comment by Heather Troglauer on April 26, 2012 at 3:17pm You are right Betty. And we know that if we had not been there and been so reactive, she wouldn't have survived the birth period. Only one lung was working properly, which explains the gasping at the start. We know that sometimes we can't save them, but we have saved so many that have turned around and been completely normal. And yes, Chantilly is the one that needs prayers. Her last foal had to be put down because he was preemie and we left him with her for 24 hour and she still went nuts when we took him. It's just too hard on her. No more foals for that girl...she can retire with TGIF and Sugar Babe if they will take her.
I am so sorry. Sometimes, no matter how hard we try, and ask for a positive outcome, the answer is no. I guess we must accept that.
Tears in my eyes.
Comment by Betty Kasper on April 26, 2012 at 3:10pm I'm so sorry to see my worst fears confirmed. If you and Shannon had not worked so tirelessly all night there would likely also have been tragedy for TGIF. Now she has a healthy big colt. Great work! It was a miracle Bug pulled through the initial delivery.Hard as that part of ranch/farm life is there are so many little victories.
Very sorry for your sad loss after such an up and down start. Sometimes life isn't fair. Prayers for all.
Comment by Betty Kasper on April 26, 2012 at 1:26pm I am sad for Chantily and whatever happened to her little one. I misss seeing them here and of course I am sad for Heather and Shannon and co. too. they worked so hard for a healthy foal and now it is having problems. Looks like Freya is working on hers some more. I hope it is a bautiful healthy little one.
Comment by Stephanie Scotton on April 26, 2012 at 12:54pm Oh my...That is so sad. Hugs and prayers to you and Chantilly this morning. Horse heaven just got a special little angel.
Comment by Teresa Gritton Dayton on April 26, 2012 at 12:51pm Heather, Im so sorry to hear about Bug. I recently had to put my horse down and it is never easy, especially when they fight so hard to live. You guys are awesome.
Comment by Heather Troglauer on April 26, 2012 at 12:46pm We had to put Bug to sleep this morning. We had the vet come out as we noticed her spine had a curve in int. X-rays revealed much more than a curve...it was a huge c shape right above her rib cage. Had we left her alive she would have had poor quality of life. One lung was not working to capacity as the ribcage was compressed at the spine, her hind legs would have been paralyzed as her bones hardened and her stomach would have been compressed too much causing frequent colics in the future.
Our vet recommended putting her down which we agreed to. Chantilly is with her while she accepts the fact that she's gone.
It just really sucks to see her get stronger, improve and then have to take this course of action. Her legs were fine - she would have come up on them in time, but the spinal issues were too much to deal with.
Chantilly will be retired with TGIF and Sugar Babe. She's suffered enough heartache.
Comment by Betty Kasper on April 26, 2012 at 11:42am Sadly it looks like there may be more trouble in paradise. Hope all is OK.
Comment by Betty Kasper on April 26, 2012 at 11:20am I can't get over how trusting and tame Heather's horses are. They put the foal through the gears for testing and the mare calmly eats. I've seen moms in other places totally freak when their baby is handled like that. Same with TGIF instead of freaking in her hour of trouble and possibly attacking she quietly waits for the team to come and help her.
