Comment by Jennifer Leigh on October 20, 2010 at 9:27pm: I really like the video below on jumping. Although I've been riding forever, I've only been jumping a couple of months. I still have problem with my position; especially my legs and hands. I tend to swing my legs too far back and lift my hands at the last moment. I liked that the video gave examples of what to do and what not to do. I need all the advice I can get.

There are times when she handles a horse where I just stand with my mouth open, she makes the hardest things look easy. She also develops horsewomen. Debbie also rides and teaches the most effective Balanced Seat that I have ever seen.
The thing I like best about her is that she is willing to listen to me. Though she does not ride FS, Debbie has been wonderful in helping me improve my FS. We have been doing a 4 year long conversation on the theories of horsemanship. I read books on horsemanship, I tell Debbie what I read, and we discuss it while I ride. She keeps me up to my equestrian ideals. And she is the only riding teacher brave enough to put me on Arabs. Learning good horsemanship on Arabs, a dream come true. Of course Debbie has lots of other types of horses, OTTB's,
Warmbloods, a Percheron, Appies, ponies, etc. etc. boarding at her barn.
She runs a big barn, about 38 horses, most in stalls with proper turnout.

I ride Forward Seat, quite similar to the Fort Riley seat, as they both have enormous inputs from the Italian Cavalry school. Or rather I TRY to ride Forward Seat, due to my MS I ride a very weak and unbalanced rider version of the Forward Seat. The more I follow Littauer, though, the more secure and effective my riding becomes. I have finally gotten strong enough to do the FS for slow equitation for a few minutes at a time, and I tell you, the minutes in which I GET IT RIGHT I finally feel secure on horseback again.
Keeping my position, with the lowered knee, really helps make up for my less than perfect balance. For those all too brief minutes I am finally moving WITH my horse again. Truly addictive!
