Hi Emily, There is no mandatory training for anyone offering equine assisted learning although there are several organizations that offer certification. I have been running EAL programs for several years at my facility for corporate and professiona…

The Quarter Rule

When you work with a horse you get back exactly what you give.

If I ask my horse to move by pushing on him with 10 pounds of pressure he will lean back on me with exactly 10 pounds of pressure. There’s a lot of pressure being exerted (20 pounds) but it isn’t getting us anywhere.

If I want my horse to move I don’t have to touch him. I can move him wherever I want to go by using my body energy. Sometimes I just have to look at his feet and he will move. That’s how sensitive a horse is.

Dealing with Difficult People

The other day a question was posted to one of my leadership networking sites. The author asked if it was possible to change the “bad attitude” of difficult employees.

At one time or other, everyone has had to deal with a difficult person. It can be a discouraging, frustrating and energy-draining experience. However, I recently came across some “horse sense” that offers a unique and positive perspective on improving these challenging relationships.

I have a difficult employee named Bob. Bob is… Continue

Leadership: Theory vs Horse Sense

I sometimes think that I have more leadership books in my office than the local Chapters. I have books promoting simple leadership, resonant leadership, real leadership, servant leadership, kind leadership etc., etc. After a while all these theories start to blend together and it becomes impossible to distinguish one from the other. You spend a lot of your time reading about leadership but reading won’t necessarily make you a great or even a good leader.

If I want to work on improving my leader… Continue

Thank you so much for your extremely kind offer! Unfortunately, I am in Halifax at the moment. I actually found out this afternoon about volunteering at a therapeutic riding program, so that sounds like a good starting point. I always get over-excited about new ideas and want to skip half the steps! Anyway, thanks so much for your help and I'll be sure to keep in touch.

Hi Emily,

Where do you live? If you are anywhere near me you are more than welcome to come and visit the program. We are just outside Toronto.

Hi Laura, I've just added you as a friend, but messed up the message part of it. I saw a comment you left on a discussion page that you run an Equine Assisted Learning program. I'm very interested in this area and am trying to find out exactly what it entails (ie, what kind of activities you do with the horses and clients), what kind of certification I would need, etc. I would love to hear any thoughts you might have. Thanks!

Hi Laura, I have joined your group and do hope to learn more about Natural Horsemanship. I am not familiar with the people you have named, but would love to know who they are and what type of approach they take. Perhaps if you have the time, you will post some info. I'm certain all of our members would be interested in that - and also in the type of work you do with horses and people. How fascinating!!

One of my minis did this too so we put the fence boards farther apart so he couldn't rub. You could also try putting wire mesh fencing on the wooden fencing so your mini can't reach through at all
