Equine Therapy: An Interview With an Equine-Assisted Expert Pam Salem By CLAIRE DOROTIK, LMF

While there are a number of ways to describe equine therapy to those not familiar with horses, sometimes there is nothing better than a personal interview. For this blog, I interviewed Pam Salem, an equine expert and co-facilitator of the equine therapy experiential program at English Mountain Recovery. Pam is also the founder of Equine Assisted Assets, which is dedicated to the growth and advancement of equine therapy.  1. What drew you to equine therapy? As a horse lover from an early age, I…See More

Equine Therapy: Can It Help Me Lose Weight?

With today’s current obsession with weight loss, people have been known to try quite an amazing array of different ways to thin down. From sweatsuits in summertime to juice diets and everything in between, we attack the “problem” mercilessly. So it’s no surprise then that recently I received an email asking if equine therapy can be helpful for weight loss.My first question was, “Do you know what the food represents for you?”The answer, “I know I am an emotional eater, so I must eat for emotional…See More

Equine Therapy: Unplugged

Equine Therapy: UnpluggedMore people than ever before are “connected”. Smart phones, Ipads, laptops and video games seem the norm when forced to wait for any these days, even if the wait is only 3 minutes. Additionally, these connection devices have easily infested almost every area of our lives and people -- so much so that to ask someone to put down the phone, shut off the computer or ipad, or disconnect the earbuds from their ears is like asking them to stop breathing. Most people will…See More

Equine Therapy: The Effects of Perfectionism on Horse-Human Relationships

Perfectionism drives human performance to elite levels, often achieving unequalled accomplishments. However, the push to be great can also have a deleterious effect on a person’s mood, and certainly, relationships. Often those around the perfectionist feel disregarded, or inadequate. But what if the relationship with the perfectionist involves a horse? Horses have a unique way of telling us the truth about ourselves, at times revealing parts of our character that were hidden or overlooked. Equine Therapy: Human-Animal Bonds

A study recently conducted by the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association found that 74 percent of dog owners, 60 percent of cat owners, and 45 percent of bird owners considered their pet as a child or family member. Sixty two percent of cat and dog owners said their pet helped them relax and relieved stress. Further, 59 percent of dog owners and 37 percent of cat owners thought their pets were not only good for their health but would help them live longer. However, when the person is…See More

A Bit About Me and my Horse(s)
CLAIRE DOROTIK, LMFT

Having spent a lifetime around horses – growing up riding and training horses and later riding at many of the country’s top show barns – Claire, in many ways, understood horses before she understood people.

Claire’s competitive accomplishments include top placings at the Almaden farms Mini Prix, the Michelob Classic Mini Prix, the Monterey Bay Mini Prix, a 2nd place finish out of 53 competitors in the High Jr/AO Jumpers at Thermal Desert Circuit, and a Reserve Championship in Baby Green Hunters Week Six at the Arizona Desert Circuit.

Turning to dressage four years ago, Claire has showed up through Prix St George with scores between 65 and 75%.

Because of the role horses have played in her life, and her education as a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Claire has made a specialization of equine facilitated psychotherapy, developing an equine assisted psychotherapeutic approach that has proved highly effective in restoring emotional and physical balance to those who have battled trauma, abuse, and eating disorders. This approach has been utilized by many recovery centers including Creative Care Recovery in Malibu, CA, The Canyon Recovery Center in Malibu, CA, and other facilities that have come to recognize the unique way in which horses can facilitate powerful healing experiences for clients. She has written many articles for Horsetrader, Ride, and Flying Changes magazines on the subject of horses and horse training, and is also a contributing author to Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy: Straight Talk from the Horse’s Mouth, a continuing education course for psychotherapists currently offered by the Zur Institute in San Diego.

Claire is also the author of, ON THE BACK OF A HORSE: Harnessing the Healing Power of the Human-Equine Bond, now available on Amazon Kindle December 25th, 2010.
Claire specializing in creating great horses, and even better horse-human partnerships. For more information on Claire, or her upcoming books, please visit www.clairedorotik.com, or www.greathorsebooks.com.
