The US standard railroad gauge (distance between the rails) is 4 feet, 8.5 inches. That's an exceedingly odd number.
Why was that gauge used? Because that's the way they built them in England , and English expatriates built the US…

Sad news to hear...
British Equestrian Team member Fiona Bigwood has lost her number one Grand Prix horse Mr G de Lully. The Swedish bred gelding had to be humanely put down after he sustained 7 fractures between his hoof and fetlock bone. He was out in the sand paddock and wearing boots and bandages at the time of the accident.
